KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat will debate the mass graves and human trafficking camps near the Malaysia-Thai border at 4.30pm.

This comes after Deputy Speaker Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said allowed a motion submitted by Gooi Hsiao Leung (PKR – Alor Star).

Ismail said he found that Gooi's motion on the matter was specific, of public importance and urgent.

"I allow the motion to be debated and it will start on 4.30pm and end at 5.30pm," the Deputy Speaker told the Dewan on Wednesday.

Gooi had proposed for the House to discuss the discovery of the 139 graves and 28 human trafficking camps found in Perlis but went unnoticed until recently.

In his motion, he urged the Home Minister to explain how such camps and graves found in Malaysia could exist without the Government’s knowledge.

“This matter is of public interest because it involves the failure of the Government to control and manage the country’s borders,” he said, adding that such an issue touched on national security.

Gooi claimed that the matter was urgent because it showed that the country’s borders were not safe.

The Opposition MP said it was important for the Government to immediately explain why it was unaware of the camps and graves which have been operating for years.

He also wanted to know why no arrests were made on enforcement officers involved in human trafficking activities at the Malaysia-Thai border.

It was reported that the police are probing the possibility of enforcement officers, including from the Forestry Department, being in cahoots with human trafficking agents.
