KOTA KINABALU: A brother of a former Federal minister is high on the wanted list over the shooting a man.

The 43-year-old suspect, known as Mat Malaya, was described as armed and dangerous after he shot an assistant mechanic following an argument on Wednesday. Three shots were fired and one hit the victim’s right calf.

The man from Selangor, who was previously charged over a drug trafficking offence in 2007, is on the run after the 2.30pm incident.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said Mat Malaya "will not hesitate to shoot at people."

“Anyone who see this man or know of his whereabouts are advised to immediately inform the police and not act on their own,” he told a press conference here Thursday.

Jalaluddin said the mechanic had gone to an air-conditioning repair workshop. There he noticed Mat Malaya staring at him in a rather fierce manner.

“The mechanic approached Mat Malaya and asked him if there was a problem,” Jalaluddin said.

A scuffle broke out and Mat Malaya whipped out a pistol and started firing at the man, he said.

The suspect fled the scene and people who were at the workshop took the victim to the hospital.

Police recovered a packet believed to contain syabu, a holster and a weighing scale.

In an unrelated case, Jalaluladdin said police smashed a house-breaking and car theft group – Geng Ah Vui - with the arrest of 11 Filipinos including a woman here between May 3 and 5.

Among the items recovered were five vehicles, two motorcycles, and laptops that were stolen in at least five reports of thefts involving the suspects aged between 21 and 43.
