KUALA LUMPUR: A symbolic Freedom Walk marked the conclusion of the three-day Asean People's Forum with a call on governments of the 10-member grouping to act on issues concerning the people.

Some 300 participants from civil society groups walked over 1.5km from Wisma MCA in Jalan Ampang, where the forum was held, to the Dang Wangi LRT station at 5.30pm on Friday carrying their country flags, banners and placards.

While walking they chanted Asean, Asean people. We want, we want our rights (to the tune of Queen's We Will Rock You), urging their leaders who will meet at the Asean Summit this weekend to address civil society's recommendations and concerns.

Policemen were on hand to assist the walk and direct the after-work traffic flow.

National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chairman Tan Sri Hasmy Agam officiated the closing ceremony of forum at the LRT station.

The annual forum, first held 10 years ago in Malaysia, is a prelude to the Summit on Apr 26 and 27.
