PETALING JAYA: Amid calls for the opposition to work with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to replace Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, one DAP lawmaker has warned that such a move is an “unimaginable disaster waiting to happen.”

Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh Deo believes Dr Mahathir’s criticism of Najib was fuelled by motivation to only save Umno, that any cooperation with the former premier would be an extension of that aim.

“There can be no doubt that Malaysia needs to be saved. Whilst I agree that Najib must go, I cannot agree with the means by which Dr Mahathir proposes to do so.

“Asserting pressure on a democratically elected Prime Minister to step down cannot be democratic and it is high time that the Pakatan Rakyat come together at this very critical time against Umno and the Barisan Nasional,” Ramkarpal said in a statement on Sunday.

Ramkarpal's view differ with that of his senior DAP colleague, Lim Kit Siang, who recently told Malaysian students in Egypt that he was even willing to work with Dr Mahathir to ‘save Malaysia’ from its failing policies.

Lim was referring to his proposed ‘Save Malaysia’ political coalition, an idea personally mooted by him in the wake of PAS’ initiative to implement hudud in Kelantan.

Ramkarpal, however, said Malaysia could only be saved with a new, clean, accountable and transparent government, adding that Pakatan should live up to its promise of being that alternative.

Dr Mahathir quelled speculation that he could work with the opposition when questioned by reporters on Sunday.
