KUALA LUMPUR: The majority of hotels here have been using the service charge to meet the minimum wage for their employees, and this is why they are up in arms over suggestions to abolish the charge altogether.
Malaysian Association of Hotels president Samuel Cheah said 93% of hotels did not have unions but had been meeting the minimum wage by topping it up with the service charge collected from consumers.
