Missing AirAsia flight: Families, relatives await news at Changi airport


SINGAPORE: Some of the family members and relatives of passengers on board of the missing Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501 have returned to the Changi International Airport holding room to wait for updates over the aircraft’s fate.

Changi Airport Group spokesman Ivan Tan said that family members began arriving at around 8am on Monday in anticipation for some form of good news about Flight QZ8501 that went off the radar en route from Surabaya to Singapore.

He added that the 24-hour room, set-up specially to provide assistance and information about the flight to the passengers' next of kin and family members, would continue to be in operations if necessary.

On Sunday, 16 relatives of 57 passengers from the 162 people on board the missing plane had taken a flight back to Surabaya at 9pm.

Flight QZ8501 vanished from the radar screens on Sunday morning over the Java Sea about 40 minutes after taking off from Surabaya to Singapore.
