Cop commits suicide after performing prayers

L/Kpl Mohd Sobri was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head at the barracks of the Labuan police.

KOTA KINABALU: A policeman, who was apparently having marital problems, shot himself at home after performing his prayers at the police barracks here.

L/Kpl Mohd Sobri Abdul Rahman, 29, was found dead by his wife with a gunshot wound to his head, and his Walther P99 pistol beside him at 12.20am, Friday.

Labuan police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said Mohd Sobri had apparently killed himself after performing prayers following his return from patrol duties.

His wife, who was sleeping with their three-year-old daughter in another room, came to investigate when she heard the single gunshot.

"We do not suspect any foul play and believe that he might have been depressed over domestic issues,’’ Supt Adzhar said.

According to him, Mohd Sobri’s body was sent back to his hometown in Grik, Perak, for burial.

Mohd Sobri had served with the Labuan police for the last six years.

Supt Adzhar said he was a model policeman when it came to carrying out his duties. "Mohd Sobri received recently a letter of commendation from the Sabah Police Commissioner for his excellence in work.’’

"He was a qualified football referee, active in sports and parade trainer among others. Just recently, he was the futsal referee for the BIMP-EAGA Friendship games held in Labuan.’’

"He was very dedicated to his job. We did not have any problems. Many of our men will miss him,’’ Supt Adzhar added.
