KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri Umno must keep up with the times in attracting youths to join the wing in order to compete with the Opposition, said Kepong Puteri division chief Hazrene Begam Mohd Husin.

"We have to follow current trends. For example, youths are drawn to social media and we must also take that course. In fact, I'm even called the 'selfie queen' by my friends!" said Hazrene, 32, when met at the Umno anual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) on Friday.

Hazrene, who runs two kindergartens, said her Puteri division not only makes use of social media to further party ideologies and programmes but also organises ceramahs and religious education courses such as kursus jenazah (handling the remains of the deceased) for the public.

The wing also planned to hold recreational activities such as Zumba classes, which according to Hazrene, would help to dispel negative labels such as Puteri members being “baby elephants”.

Kimanis Putri chief Saudah Sarzaman, 35, hoped that the Malaysian Puteri Umno leadership would help to increase the promotion of Puteri events in future so that the wing could grow at a quicker rate.

"If there are those within Puteri who are qualified, there is nothing wrong if we work to polish their capabilities.
