KUALA LUMPUR: Using the message of brotherhood in a new local Tamil movie, the New Gen Party called on Malaysians of all races to unite against the external elements trying to disrupt the unity.

NewGen Party secretary-general S. Gobi Krishnan said this was the message behind Phuyal 18, a film about being colour blind to race and the spirit of brotherhood among the different races.

Produced and directed by local filmmaker M. Subash, the theme of the movie - centering mainly around gangsterism - has received positive reviews.

Gobi believes that such mediums are effective to promote positive messages about the country to the general public.

“If you watch the movie, there are heroes and villains from all races. It is about how we unite to fight the negative elements trying to infiltrate the country.

“Many things are shown in a metaphorical sense, but it depicts the real situation in the country.

"For example, how some politicians are working hand in hand with gangsters and how we must weed out the 'bad apples,'” said Gobi when met at the public screening of the film organised by NewGen on Sunday.

The theme of Phuyal 18 is similar to the message being promoted by the NewGen Party, he said.

“Phuyal, meaning ‘tornado’, is us telling the people that each of them can be a tornado.

"When you see something bad happening, don’t wait for someone else to take action. Do it yourself, whether it is fighting corruption or gangsterism.

“We also want to tell people that each of them has a role to play, no matter how small,” he said.

Gobi, who acted in the movie, said there are plans to make a sequel.

“A storyline for the sequel is currently in development. Hopefully, we can touch more on gangsterism as it is a very prominent issue, especially among the Indian community,” he said.

He praised Subash who is known for making films that carry important messages.

“What I like about him is that he’s doing a lot of movies that involve all the races. He gives them a Malaysian flavour, which is why we decided to work with him on this,” Gobi added.

Phuyal 18, released on Oct 23, is showing at selected cinemas nationwide.
