Six killed in three-vehicle collision

Grim sight: A badly damaged vehicle in the accident in Rompin.

KUANTAN: Six people, believed to be family members, died in a three-vehicle collision at Km142.8 of Jalan Kuantan-Segamat, near Rompin, on the eve of Hari Raya Haji.

Rompin OCPD Deputy Superintendent Johari Jahaya said the group was travelling in a Perodua Alza from Segamat, Johor, to here when the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered towards the opposite lane at about 8.15pm yesterday.

“It then crashed into an oncoming bus with 26 passengers in it,” he said.

A Perodua Myvi, which was moving behind the Perodua Alza, tried to avoid crashing into the car but landed in a ditch by the side of the road.

“The driver, the only person in the car, was unhurt,” said DSP Johari.

He said of the deceased, three were men, two women and another was a girl.

The two women were Siti Habibah Kasbon, 43, and Zaliha Johar, 42. One of the men was Azhar Mat Ali, 43. All three were from Johor.

The others have not yet been identified.

According to the police, a nine-month-old baby girl was slightly injured on the head and given outpatient treatment at Segamat Hospital.

The bus driver was warded at the hospital after sustaining injuries to the eyes.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, said DSP Johari.
