PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed it detained a politician from Sabah over allegations of corruption in the payment of compensation over state-owned land.
Its investigations director Datuk Mohd Jamidan Abdullah said the politician was arrested on Friday when he showed up at the MACC headquarters to give his statement.
This is contradictory to earlier news reports stating that the politician was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Thursday.
“We are still conducting investigations on this individual under Section 17(a) of the MACC act in regard to allegations that he was involved in corruption in the payment of compensation over state-owned land.
“Once his statement was recorded, the individual was released,” Jamidan said in a statement on Tuesday.
A Sabah newspaper had earlier reported that a Sabah Umno leader was detained in connection with a Criminal Breach of Trust (CBT) amounting to RM300million.
It said the politician concerned was a former deputy chairman of a state agency and one of the 25 Umno division chiefs in the state.
