KUANTAN: It is said that third time’s the charm. But for the SMK Sultan Abu Bakar team, participating for the second time in the RHB-The Star Mighty Minds National Challenge is good enough for them to become state champions.
Team member Yeoh Chui Yen said she and teammate Celine Woon Sue Lin took part in the competition last year. But they only managed to land in the fourth place of the upper secondary category.
Together with newcomer Alicia Yau in the team, Yeoh said they had not expected to clinch the grand prize of RM5,000.
“We have already planned to enter as a team since early this year. Our strong suit is general knowledge since we have read up a lot to prepare for the competition.
“But still, this win is unexpected,” said the Form Five student.
Coming in second was MRSM Kuantan while SMK Air Putih took third place.
SMK Abdul Rahman Talib took first place in the lower secondary category with Sekolah Sains Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Pekan and SMK Hwa Lian coming in second and third respectively.
SMK Abdul Rahman Talib team member T. Shrie Raam said he and his colleagues were stunned with their victory as they did not make any preparations at all.
“We were only told about the competition last week. We did not have any special strategy at all and could only try our best,” he added.
Shrie Raam and his teammates G. Kugen and Adam Julian Saifuddin were all from different classes, but their team spirit clearly won the day.
RHB east coast regional director Shaharuddin Ming and The Star events manager Victor Cheong were on hand to present the prizes.
The next state challenge will be held in Petaling Jaya, Selangor on Aug 23.
After the 14 state challenges are complete, all champions will make their way to the Klang Valley for the National Finals.
The competition is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and RHB Banking Group.
