PETALING JAYA: PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has made a fresh request for an audience with the Selangor Sultan to explain that she enjoys majority support in the state assembly.
The mentri besar-aspirant has asked for an audience to seek Sultan Sharafudin Idris Shah’s advice on a smooth transition from Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to her.
Selangor Palace sources said she was also seeking advice from the Sultan on the option of convening a special sitting of the state assembly to move a resolution of no confidence against Khalid.
Dr Wan Azizah, undaunted by public opinion that the Palace is not with her, is approaching the Sultan on a steadier footing now that she has the support of the majority of the 56 Selangor assemblymen.
On Thursday, a total of 30 Pakatan assemblymen declared their support for her. They comprise 15 from DAP, 13 from PKR and two PAS representatives who are now facing disciplinary action from their party for going against its stand on the mentri besar issue.
It is learnt that Dr Wan Azizah’s letter requesting the royal audience includes the statutory declarations of the 30 assemblymen.
However, the Sultan is likely to act on this only after he returns from abroad on Aug 27. He returned briefly this afternoon from overseas but flew out again early today.
Pakatan sources said the coalition leaders were trying to avoid the no-confidence move against Khalid for fear of negative publicity over a man seen as the “people’s mentri besar”.
Moreover, the Federal Court decision on the Perak constitutional crisis a few year ago favours the first option of the Pakatan government continuing to rule if it commands the majority in the state assembly.
This is Dr Wan Azizah’s third attempt at an audience with the Sultan.
The Sultan rejected the first request, which was made by her husband and PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with the intention of explaining PKR’s sacking of Khalid.
She quickly followed up with a second letter signed in her own name and in her capacity as PKR president but received no reply.
