PETALING JAYA: PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah is claiming that she should be the Mentri Besar of Selangor as she has the majority support among the state assemblymen.
To prove her point, she and 29 other assemblymen signed statutory declarations (SDs), declaring support for her as Mentri Besar.
Two of those who signed were from PAS, while all 15 DAP assemblymen and 13 PKR representatives also signed. The two PAS members backing Dr Wan Azizah are Saari Sungib (Hulu Kelang) and Hasnul Baharuddin (Morib).
Thirteen other PAS representatives in the 56-seat assembly have yet to announce their stand, pending a central committee meeting on Sunday to decide on the party’s official stand.
Four of the PAS assemblymen continued to be members of the state legislative council headed by Khalid, now the independent Port Klang assemblyman after he was sacked from the PKR last week.
Dr Wan Azizah, who is Kajang assemblyman, announced she had the majority support at a media conference yesterday.
“Besides being present to show their support today (yesterday), their stand is clear and was done in the form of signed statutory declarations.
“With this development, we confirm we have the majority in the state legislative assembly by at least four assemblymen,” she said, comparing her 30-strong support. The 26 other seats are shared among Khalid, Umno (12) and PAS (13).
Dr Wan Azizah said she sent a letter at 11.30am to seek an audience with the Sultan of Selangor. Enclosed with the letter were the SDs.
“I am also seeking Tuanku’s view, if necessary, for the Speaker to call for a meeting of the state legislative assembly to finalise the process of changing the Mentri Besar,” Dr Wan Azizah said, telling Khalid to respect their decision and resign immediately.
“He should allow for the smooth transition of power in an orderly fashion and not make any official policy or state decisions as his legitimacy as Mentri Besar has ceased,” she said.
She also called on other PAS assemblymen to support her in a bid to return power to Pakatan in Selangor.
Later, when asked on the possibility of the Sultan rejecting her candidacy as Mentri Besar and seeking an alternative candidate, Dr Wan Azi-zah said: “We have to ask. His (the Ruler’s) side has to answer first.”
Khalid, a second-term mentri besar, was sacked from PKR last Saturday for refusing to make way for Dr Wan Azizah to take over his post.
He has since sacked five state executive councillors from the PKR and DAP.
