Empty seats: Khalid chairing the exco meeting in Shah Alam yesterday. Only four exco members from PAS attended the meeting after the sacking of five members – two from PKR and three from DAP. Another member, PKR’s Rodziah Ismail, is currently overseas.
SHAH ALAM: The axe is being sharpened for PKR and DAP’s local councillors who look to be next in line following Tuesday’s sacking of five exco members in the state government.
Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the decision on whether to sack them would be made after deliberation at the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting today.
“The status of the councillors will be known tomorrow. We need to see if there can be smooth running of the state and its development. If there isn’t a need to do so (drop them), we will not do it.
“But we will do it if we have to,” Khalid told reporters after chairing the weekly exco meeting yesterday.
Ironically, Khalid said the five sacked exco members — DAP’s Datuk Teng Chang Khim, Ean Yong Hian Wah and V. Ganabathirao as well as PKR’s Elizabeth Wong and Dr Daroyah Alwi – were welcome to attend the MTES meeting.
“But not as exco members. We will have an open discussion there,” said Khalid who was himself sacked by PKR last Saturday for not resigning and making way for party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to take over as the mentri besar.
It is not known as yet if the axed exco members will take up Khalid’s invitation.
On the legality of their dismissal, Khalid not only distributed copies of his letter to Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah requesting consent to terminate the five executive councillors but also produced the letter from the Sultan giving him permission to do so.
He said the five exco members could not be allowed to continue in the state government after they had issued a joint statement that they did not want to have anything to do with the mentri besar and would only attend the weekly exco meetings.
He said the statement contravened the 10 Aku Janji (promise) and Sumpah Kesetiaan (loyalty pledge) which they recited when they took their oath of office in front of the Sultan.
To a question if Selangor’s economic adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would also be booted out of the state administration, Khalid said he would leave it to his exco members — PAS’ Iskandar Samad, Sallehen Mukhyi, Dr Halimah Ali and Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi.
Khalid also said there were no plans to appoint more exco members at present.
“The state is now run by me and the four excos working together with the public servants,” said Khalid.
Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua said the party was adopting a “wait-and-see” attitude towards talk of the possible sacking of its councillors. “We’ll see if he does it.”
He also said they had no intention to withdraw the DAP councillors from the 12 local councils in Selangor for now. “Why should we?”
