KUALA LUMPUR: Eighty per cent of the next of kin of Malaysians involved in the MH17 tragedy have notified the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry on how they preferred to have the bodies managed upon their arrival home.
According to Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, her ministry is not in a rush to pressure the rest to give an answer.
“We cannot push them as some are still in the midst of discussion with their family members.
“However, we hope to get the information as soon as possible to facilitate the arrangements,” she said when met at the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry Hari Raya open house here yesterday.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Rohani’s deputy, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.
Other guests at the event include the family members of MH370 chief steward Andrew Nari – his wife, Melanie Antonio, daughter Maira Elizabeth, 18, and son, Malcolm, 13.
MH370 disappeared on March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
“There are times I feel he is not coming back, then when you get closer to God, you get the feeling that he is coming back but I don’t really think of my dad because when I do, I tend to break down.
“I don’t want to show my sadness to my mum or my brother, so I keep things to myself.
“Most of the time I try not to think about him. Overall, we are doing okay,” said Maira, who added that Muhyiddin had asked Malcolm what his ambition was.
“Malcolm told him that he intends to be a pilot, and Muhyiddin advised him to study hard,” said Maira, who revealed that she keeps herself occupied with assignments and activities related to her pursuit of a diploma in mass communications at a local college.
Antonio often meets up with the next of kin of those on MH370, as well as with friends who were former cabin crew.
“We have been visiting each other for support. We often talk about our feelings, how we are coping with the children and our family.”
