KOTA BARU: PAS has opened its doors to Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to join the party following his sacking from the PKR on Saturday.
“He is free to join PAS,” said Dewan Ulama acting chief Datuk Ahmad Yakob, who is also Kelantan Mentri Besar.
“It is up to Khalid to join PAS since he has been sacked by his party.
“Our doors are always open to him,” Ahmad told reporters at the Kelantan State Economic Corporation’s Hari Raya gathering here yesterday.
“But whatever it is, we will have to wait for the outcome of his audience with the Sultan of Selangor to get royal advice on his next course of action,” added Ahmad.
He was asked to comment on the expulsion of the Selangor Mentri Besar from PKR for not heeding calls to step down from his office to make way for party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to replace him.
PAS’ most influential leaders, party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, have thrown their support behind Khalid to remain as Mentri Besar until his term ends.
“Khalid’s sacking from PKR is their prerogative. PAS has made its stand, via the Syura Council and the Dewan Ulama, to back him,” said Ahmad.
He said PAS was willing to stand alone without the support of PKR and DAP should its party members and leaders decide it was better to leave the Pakatan Rakyat coalition following the divisive stand taken by the parties over the Mentri Besar issue.
“We have a history of going on our own due to differences with the Barisan Nasional and Semangat 46 in those days,” he said in an apparent reference to the time when PAS withdrew from Barisan in the 1970s and its short-lived collaboration with the now-defunct Semangat 46 in the 1980s.
“I agree with Datuk Nik Aziz that PAS can stand on its own should there be a decision to leave Pakatan,” said Ahmad.
“But I want to remind party leaders, members and supporters to keep calm and wait for the final decision to be decided next week.”
On Saturday, PAS pushed a meeting to decide on the issue to Aug 17, a week after the original date.
