Warm welcome: Sultan Sharafuddin being greeted by Jais officers upon arrival at a gathering with the department’s personnel in Shah Alam.
SHAH ALAM: Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has called on state Islamic institutions to concentrate their efforts against issues that will damage the faith, such as deviant teachings and apostasy.
He said the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) should remain neutral and act within its scope of duties.
Jais officers, he added, should not always concentrate enforcement on massage parlours, which are under the purview of local council authorities.
“This is to avoid slander against Jais, that it is only focusing on trivial matters while major issues are not given priority.
“Therefore, I advise Jais to stress more on cases such as deviant teachings, apostasy, preaching without a permit and political speeches at mosques and surau that can taint the sanctity of Islam and cause disunity among the Muslim community,” he said in his speech after meeting Jais staff at the Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah here yesterday.
The Ruler said he realised that institutions such as Jais and the Selangor Islamic Council (Mais) had gone through challenges and baseless allegations. But, the challenge to preserve and protect Islam was much bigger.
He also said there were politicians who wanted to take advantage of these issues and question the actions of Mais and Jais as their political agenda.
“I do not want this to happen in Selangor. I want everyone in Mais and Jais to avoid involvement in any agenda of any political party,” he added.
On enforcement, the Ruler reminded Jais to carry out its duties carefully, with professionalism, fairness and adherence to procedures and the law.
“Jais must have a complete standard operating procedure. Avoid acting harshly or going overboard and infringing on the rights of the people.
“I believe if enforcement is done based on the law and SOP, justice will be preserved and those involved in wrongdoing can be brought to justice,” he added.
He also advised Jais to make orderly preparations before carrying out raids.
“Bring equipment for investigations, such as cameras, video cameras, diaries and trustworthy witnesses.
“An orderly procedure is important to preserve the good name of Jais as there are those who question the action and credibility of Jais in its work,” he added.
Jais came under heavy criticism recently for its raid on a Hindu wedding where it detained a bride who was suspected to be a Muslim, as well as seizing copies of Malay and Iban-language Bibles from the Bible Society of Malaysia.
