Ready for a challenge: Ng catching up on the news while honing his word skills.
PETALING JAYA: For senior citizen Ng Kah Soon, solving word puzzles keeps his mind active.
It is not surprising then that Ng is delighted with The Star’s Win with Words campaign, which kicked off on June 23.
“Sometimes I will buy several copies of the paper to collect the letters I need,” said the former English language teacher who turns 80 next month.
A resident of the Seri Setia Old Folk’s Home here, Ng said his only difficulty with the contest was cutting out the small letters.
“The nerves on my fingers have been affected after a reaction to anaesthetics during an operation. So my fingers can get quite numb,” he said.
Ng said he could get really occupied trying to form words with the highest points.
“It is a good way to pass the time and I enjoy doing it, so I don’t mind.”
The elderly contestant has only modest aims.
“I don’t think I will win but if I do, even a small prize will be a nice surprise,” said Ng, who reads extensively to hone his word skills.
“When I was young, I used to like reference books but now I read mostly newspapers,” added the loyal reader of The Star since the 1970s.
Ng is one of many enthusiasts who are hooked on the word challenge organised by The Star as a Merdeka special to reward its readers.
Participants only have to come up with three words for each entry.
However, the more entries that they submit, the higher their chances of winning will be.
Even by just taking part, contestants may get one of 20 special Merdeka prizes of RM500 each.
The competition, partnered by Hong Leong Bank and Naza Group of Companies’ subsidiary Nasim Sdn Bhd, is presented over four series of two weeks each.
It’s now into its final “N” series. The campaign will end on Aug 17.
Prizes for the four rounds as well as the grand finale are worth over RM400,000. These include two Peugeot cars.
From today to Sunday, the Win with Words booth will be at AEON Big Bukit Rimau in Kota Kemuning, Selangor, AEON Big Seberang Jaya in Penang and Giant Bercham, Ipoh.
Sign up for The Star Bundle – one-year subscription of the newspaper and ePaper plus eflavours – to earn an extra 100 points for your submission.
