PETALING JAYA: The crisis in Pakatan Rakyat stems from the fact that Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not think his plans through, said Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.
Zaid, a former PKR leader who helped draft Pakatan Rakyat’s Common Policy Framework, said that if a decision on the Selangor Mentri Besar’s position had been made months ago, Anwar should have sought everybody’s views then.
“He thinks that whatever he wants, people will follow. As the opposition leader, he has shown a poor example on how to present a united front,” Zaid said when contacted.
A crisis is brewing in Pakatan over the position of Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor Mentri Besar. Last Wednesday, the Pakatan leadership agreed in principle for Khalid to be replaced as Selangor MB by Kajang assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
However, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat have shot that down and publicly supported Khalid.
The situation blew up when a leaked WhatsApp conversation revealed PAS central committee member Dr Zuhdi Marzuki discussing the possibility of the party working together with Umno while retaining Khalid as Selangor MB.
Zaid, however, does not think that Pakatan will split up, although it will be weaker.
“If they break up, Barisan Nasional will kill them (the individual parties). However, it won’t be the same again for them,” the former Kota Baru MP said.
Asked if PKR had valid reasons for wanting to replace Khalid, Zaid said it did not but as a party person, Khalid should abide by PKR’s position. “He should abide by the party’s decision unless he decides to leave it,” Zaid said.
PKR treasurer-general William Leong also said the right and proper thing for Khalid to do now would be to step down amicably.
Former Kajang assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh said PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should remove Khalid as soon as possible.
“I have done my part and now it’s time for Anwar to use his clout to remove Khalid,” said Lee who resigned as Kajang assemblyman to make way for Anwar in the infamous Kajang Move.
In George Town, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party wanted a clear stand from all political party leaders that there would be no objection to a woman being appointed as Mentri Besar.
“If every political party accepts a woman can be a Mentri Besar (or a Prime Minister), then we can look at pros and cons on the replacement (of Khalid),” he said.
Lim said the Federal Constitution does not say that a woman cannot be Mentri Besar. “Where is this stated? Are we going to reject Dr Wan Azizah’s candidacy because she is a woman?” Lim said at a press conference at his office yesterday.
