MALACCA: An 11-year-old boy’s return to his hometown for the Hari Raya holidays turned tragic when he drowned while swimming at the Pengkalan Balak beachfront in Alor Gajah near here.
Wan Putera Izz Danish Wan Azrol Affendi’s body was discovered by rescue workers at 12.19am, about a kilometre from where he went missing.
Apparently, Wan Putera was swept away by strong undercurrents when he went swimming with his cousin at 6.30pm on Thursday.
State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Sohaimi Mohamed said his team received a distress call at 7.41pm before a rescue mission was launched.
He said rescue boats combed the site where the victim was reported missing.
“His body was then found along the beach,” Sohaimi said.
The victim’s father, Wan Azrol Affendi Yunos, 39, said his eldest son went to Alor Gajah to celebrate Hari Raya with his grandparents.
He added that Wan Putera lived with his mother, Wan Azrol’s ex-wife, in Puchong, Selangor.
“He returned to Malacca on Tuesday,” he said.
