GLASGOW: Mohd Hafifi Mansor clinched the first gold medal for Malaysia at the 20th Commonwealth Games here in the men's weightlifting 69kg category.
Mohd Hafifi, 24, lifted a total 305kg - 135kg in the Snatch and 170kg in the Clean and Jerk - in the final at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre Precint on Saturday.
Nigeria's Yinka Ayenuwa, who lifted 302kg, won silver while Omkar Otari from India, grabbed the bronze with 296kg.
Another national weightlifter Mohammad Huzairi Ramli finished fifth with 290kg.
Mohd Hafifi attributed his success to listening to his coach's advice in not engaging in psychological warfare with his opponents and being patient.
He also thanked Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin for his support and dedicates his win to his mother.
