KUALA LUMPUR: BookFest@Malaysia 2014, which is happening over the next nine days, is a good opportunity for people to develop the reading habit.
Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan said the event was in line with the Government’s aim of building a reading nation.
“Reading is an essential habit that we should all have,” he said during the launch of BookFest@Malaysia 2014.
The fest, which is organised by Popular Book Company (M) Sdn Bhd, is the largest book expo in South-East Asia and is being held for the ninth consecutive year.
Popular Holdings Ltd chairman Vangat Ramayah said there were over 710,000 visitors last year.
“We expect the number (this year) to be higher,” he said in his opening address.
He said BookFest@Malaysia 2014 had grown beyond expectations to become the most significant annual literary event in Malaysia.
He said highlights of the event included a cooking demonstration by Chef Wan and a Figure Robics exercise session with Korean fitness guru Jung Da-yeon.
Local authors will be honoured at an awards ceremony at the book expo as well.
Popular-The Star Readers’ Choice Awards and Popular-BH Anugerah Pilihan Pembaca enters its seventh year with 40 notable Malaysian authors nominated.
Among them are former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and Tim Donoghue.
Visitors to BookFest@Malaysia 2014 will have a chance to mingle with about 200 authors and personalities throughout the event.
They include Chef Wan, Amber Chia and Russell Lee.
BookFest@Malaysia 2014 will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from today to Aug 3 from 10am to 10pm daily.
Admission is with purchase of the BookFest catalogue at RM2.50 per entry or RM10 for multiple entries over the nine days.
Catalogues are available at all Popular and Harris bookstore outlets nationwide and at the BookFest entrance.
Entrance is free for students below 18 and for senior citizens aged 60 and above.
