Aid for the needy: Najib presenting contributions from tithes to a recipient in Pekan.
PEKAN: Datuk Seri Najib Razak said despite being a small country, Malaysia has managed to uphold its image and dignity in the handling of the MH17 issue.
Referring to his success in brokering a deal with the Ukrainian separatist group to release the bodies of the victims and the plane’s black box, the Prime Minister said that to do so, he had to stay up until between 3am to 4am to call several world leaders and separatist leader Alexander Barodai.
“Alhamdulillah (thanks to Allah), we managed to get back the black box and brought out the bodies of the victims from Ukraine,” he said when presenting Ramadan aid to senior citizens at Kampung Tanjung Medang near here yesterday.
The tragedy, he said, was a great test for the country, especially in the month of Ramadan.
After the breaking of fast there, Najib was presented with a surprise present of pulut kuning from the villagers in conjunction with his 61st birthday, which fell on Wednesday.
Earlier, Najib contributed RM200,000 in tithe payment for the Pekan constituency.
A total of RM1.5mil was collected for distribution to the poor in the constituency, including from businessman Datuk Bakri Ismail (RM200,000), Bank Rakyat (RM600,000), Uda Holdings (RM200,000), Affin Islamic Bank (RM100,000), Tabung Haji (RM100,000), Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan (RM60,000) and SME Bank (RM50,000).
The recipients comprised 5,816 needy and poor folks and 60 orphans.
This was the fourth year that tithes were channelled directly to benefit the people of Pekan.
Retiree Mohd Zawawi Othman, 61, of Peramu Jaya, said he was grateful for the assistance and would use the money to purchase basic necessities to celebrate Aidilfitri.
Zawariah Salleh, 56, of Pulau Manis, said she was thankful to the Government for providing assistance every year.
“This shows the Government cares for our welfare and wellbeing,” she said.
Also present during the ceremony held at the convention hall were Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, state Speaker Datuk Ishak Muhammad and state assemblymen Khairuddin Mahmud (Pulau Manis), Datuk Sheikh Mohmed Puzi Sheikh Ali (Peramu Jaya), Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff (Bebar) and Datuk Abu Bakar Harun (Chini).
