PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife met families of passengers and crew of those on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 which went down in Ukraine late Thursday.

The prime minister and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor spent nearly two hours with the family members, comforting them and addressing concerns regarding their loved ones at the JW Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya.

Present were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

"The PM spent a lot of time talking to the families, and consoling them. They wanted to know when they could go to Ukraine to bring back the remains of their loved ones.

"He explained to them that his priority is to ensure their safety. If their safety can be assured, he would fly them there immediately," Shahrizat told reporters.

She said the meeting was emotional for everyone but the family members did not show anger at any point and were very understanding of the situation they were in.

The MAS Bowing 777 was flying over Ukrainian airspace from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was reportedly brought down.

There were 283 passengers and 15 crew members on the plane.
