MP seeks audience with Sultan of Selangor

PETALING JAYA: Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad accepted Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s reprimand and will seek an audience with the Selangor Ruler to explain his comments pertaining to the Selangor State Islamic Council’s (Mais) executive powers.

“I was shocked at first when I was informed by the media during buka puasa on Tuesday (of the Sultan’s admonishment), but I accept it.

“I hope to have an audience with the Sultan and provide His Highness with a personal explanation so that he can understand the context of my statement,” the PAS MP said when mStar Online contacted him yesterday.

On Tuesday, Sultan Sharafuddin ticked off Khalid for suggesting that Mais be stripped of its executive powers, labelling him as ignorant of the state Islamic laws and Mais’ role.

Last month, following the Selangor State Islamic Religious Department (Jais) and Mais’ refusal to return Bibles in the Malay language that were seized from the Bible Society of Malaysia’s office, Khalid and three other PAS lawmakers called for the executive powers of Mais to be reviewed.

The other three were Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, Kota Raja MP Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud and Hulu Langat MP Dr Che Rosli Che Mat.

In a joint statement, they said the move was to prevent Mais from tarnishing the name of the Sultan.

In a related development, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim urged elected representatives in the state to conduct themselves accordingly and in a respectful manner.

An elected representative has to observe decorum and due respect when channelling an idea, he said.

“We have to give prominence to decorum and respect because if our idea is good, our ultimate goal is for it to be realised,” Khalid Ibrahim added.

He said elected representatives must ensure the best interest of the people they represent is protected in whatever they say or do.

Khalid Ibrahim added that everyone must also take into consideration the position of the country’s constitutional monarchy when airing their views.
