PETALING JAYA: Selangor looks set to appoint Azmin Ali as the new Mentri Besar soon, replacing the embattled Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim who has been pressured to relinquish his position.
Although PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been reported saying there was no hurry to replace Khalid, a source close to Azmin said the transition would be done after Hari Raya.
"The appointment will after all be made after Hari Raya," said the source Tuesday.
The source added that Azmin now has the backing of PAS, which was reluctant previously with the notion of replacing Khalid with the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman.
The source added that both DAP and PAS have given their backing for Azmin's appointment as the new Mentri Besar, in a closed-door Pakatan Rakyat meeting held Monday.
"However, the ultimate decision will be made by Anwar in the near future," said the source, adding that a presidential meeting will discuss the matter before Hari Raya.
The source also claimed that the palace had no issue with replacing Khalid, "as long as it is done according to the state legislative".
However, it was reported Tuesday that Selangor PAS were of the view that Khalid should continue until the next general election.
Those said to be in favour of Khalid included Selangor PAS commissioner and state executive councillor Iskandar Samad, who had been named as a possible replacement for Khalid.
Other PAS state executive councillors like Dr Halimah Ali, Sallehen Mukhyi and Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi also defended Khalid.
Dr Yunus, in a statement Tuesday, warned that the apparent power struggle in the state would draw intense displeasure and disgust from the people, who chose to vote Pakatan in for the second term.
"They would say that we and Barisan Nasional leaders are no different," he said.
He added that it would be unfortunate for the coalition to suffer defeat in the next general election due to its own fault.
DAP, when contacted, also denied that an agreement had been made to replace Khalid with Azmin.
"No, we have never discussed this matter at all," said Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lau Weng San.
Khalid has been under intense pressure to give up his post, following a barrage of criticism against him over his handling of various issues in the state.
The Port Klang assemblyman, who is losing to Azmin in the PKR deputy presidency race, was also known not to consult the party regarding state policies.
