KUALA LUMPUR: Thirty-five veteran artistes received RM2,000 each from Yayasan Artis 1Malaysia (YA1M) as appreciation for their contribution to the entertainment industry and the nation.
YA1M president Datuk D.J. Dave said the gift was to recognise the actors and singers for having done much in nation-building as “society has been kept together by their entertainment”.
“So why not give them that respect,” said D.J. Dave at the presentation ceremony-cum-breaking of fast at the Saloma Theatre Restaurant here on Thursday.
He noted that artistes at that time were paid very little and received hardly any recognition for their talents and effort, while the producers and composers got the lion’s share of the profits.
“We want these artistes to get a fair share of the credit for their hard work,” he said, adding that insurance was already in place for all artistes when they reach 55.
Among the recipients was actor Suntheresan S.M. Palani, 62, who lamented the lack of progress for artistes in today’s local Tamil entertainment industry.
“Good actors do not get paid well. And when they retire, they have little money for survival,” he said.
He also said that artistes from the old generation were unable to find acting jobs now.
“They are lost when they enter the film studio and can’t keep up with the demands of the younger generation. There is no chance for old-timers in acting,” Suntheresan said.
Rokiman Mohd Said, 66, a singer and guitarist for a group named Alice Sound, said he would use the money well.
“For a man my age, I don’t have many needs. So I will use it for necessities and things for the house,” he said with a smile.
