PETALING JAYA: Malaysian football fans are giddy with excitement over the World Cup final clash between old adversaries Germany and Argentina.
“World Cup Final di Dataran Merdeka. Sahur (lauk Jerman) disediakan. (World Cup Final at Dataran Merdeka. Sahur (with German food) provided). See you there!” tweeted Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is known to support Argentina.
The match will take place on Monday in Malaysia.
This is the third meeting between the two giants in a World Cup final match.
In 1986, Argentina, led by the legendary Diego Maradona, emerged champions with a 3-2 win against the then West Germany.
In 1990, West Germany took home the trophy after defeating Argentina 1-0 with a late penalty kick by Andreas Brehme.
“It can turn out to be the 1986 final or 1990 final all over again. May the best team win,” said Facebook user Aunty Sharmila.
“It’s going to be close and exciting. Can’t wait for the final to begin,” said Facebook user Tan Kar Can.
Many netizens also turned part-time pundits, offering their predictions on which team will win.
Many pointed out that the Argentina team relied heavily on captain Lionel Messi, but that Germany had a more well-balanced side.
Zaidi Lipu praised Germany’s teamwork and predicted that it would win a fourth World Cup trophy.
“Don’t see any team, even with a Messi, that can match Germany at the moment,” he said.
“As a German living in KL, I am 100% sure Germany will win. We have 20 very good players, not just one Messi,” agreed Kin Ling Fuchs.
Germany is viewed as the favourite for the World Cup, a belief cemented after the 7-1 thrashing it gave Brazil in the semi-final on Wednesday.
However, Argentina fans retorted that Germany would face a formidable opponent.
“Germany won because of Brazil’s bad defence and the loss of Neymar. Argentina sure gonna win the final!” said Kristine Alexandra.
“I think Argentina will win because it defends well, and in front Messi is genius,” said Rarza Zydy.
In the other semi-final on Thursday, Argentina defeated the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties after a scoreless 90 minutes and extra time.
