PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry will redeploy the 115 teachers who were posted to Chinese national-type primary schools (SJKC) and Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP) despite being trained to teach the Chinese language at SPM level.
Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh conveyed this to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) yesterday.
“All the 115 teachers will be sent to national secondary schools (SMK) and national-type secondary schools (SMJK).
They are the 77 who have been posted to SJKC and 38 who have been sent to SBP.
“Now, we will have an additional 115 teachers to mitigate the shortage of Chinese language teachers in both these schools,” Dr Wee said yesterday.
Their posting dates and placements, said Dr Wee, would be decided by the Education Ministry.
The teachers – from a group of 130 graduates of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) – were sent to boarding schools, vocational schools and colleges to teach basic Chinese instead of SPM-level Mandarin, which was what they were trained to do.
This led Dr Wee, who is also MCA deputy president, to appeal to the ministry to redeploy them to the right schools in line with their training.
He said since the teachers were trained to educate SPM-level students in the subject, they should be sent to secondary schools as intended.
Dr Wee also said the decision on another 15 teachers was expected to be known soon.
“With the redeployment, we treat this issue as good as solved since 88.4% will be sent to the right schools,” he added.
