GEORGE TOWN: The George Town Festival (GTF) has been featured by Bangkok’s lifestyle magazine BK Magazine Online as one of the nine best upcoming events.
George town Festival director Joe Sidek said the festival would take place from Aug 1 to 31.
All the nine events are scheduled to take place from now till September.
The other events rated by the
magazine, which was published last Friday, are the Melbourne International Film Festival at the Art Centre Melbourne (July 31-Aug 17), Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, (July 1-29), AIA Real Life: NOW Festival at the Jamsil Sports Complex Main Stadium in Seoul
(Aug 15-16), Summer Sonic in Tokyo and Osaka (Aug 16-17), Pohang International Fireworks Festival at the Hyeongsangang Sports Park, Yeongildae northern beach and other locations in South Korea (July 31-Aug 3), Fuji Rock Festival at the Naebi Ski Resort in Niigata, (July 25-27), Singapore International Festival of Arts (Aug 21-Sept 21) and Formula One Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit (Sept 19-21).
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng described the magazine’s selection as “something that is very positive for Penang”.
“The credit belongs to the people of Penang. It is their talent.
“We can be good in arts, culture and heritage and we can feel proud of our arts and culture in Penang,” Lim said after opening the 6th Unesco World Heritage Site anniversary celebrations of George Town yesterday.
Themed “Living Legacies”, this year’s heritage celebrations showcased George Town’s traditional crafts that have been passed down through generations.
In his speech earlier, Lim said the theme was appropriate as it helped to appreciate traditional handicraft traders.
“We are very fortunate as we still have many traders and craftsmen who still practise these traditional arts and crafts,” he said.
