DBKL should solve foreign beggar problem, says Dr Wee

KERIAN: The Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) should do something about the foreign beggars wandering in the city to ensure that the image of the city is upheld said MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

Dr Wee said he had spoken to local hawkers in the city centre who felt that there were many beggars haggling for money on the streets.

"There are many foreign beggars, some from China, especially at Jalan Imbi.

"They ask people for money and many think that they are Malaysians," he told journalists after opening a two-day motivation camp organised by Penang MCA at the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort here on Saturday.

"It is only when they start to talk that people realise that they are not locals. The hawkers there advise people not to give them money," Dr Wee said.

"I think most of them are controlled by syndicates and the DBKL should do something about them," he added.

Dr Wee was commenting on a statement by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku
Mansor who said that soup kitchens would no longer be allowed to operate within a 2km radius of Lot 10 as they encouraged people to remain homeless and jobless.

Dr Wee said halfway homes could be set up as a way to help the homeless.

"This would need the effort from the Welfare Department while being assisted by non-governmental organisations," he said.
