Rela, Navy personnel nabbed for militant activities

KUALA LUMPUR: A Rela member and a Navy staff have been detained for suspected involvement in a local militant group.

The Rela member was nabbed in Kuala Kangsar on June 25 while the latter was picked up in Sandakan two days later by Bukit Aman's Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division officers.

The arrests bring the total number to 19 since the special operation started on April 28.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police believed the Rela member was the maker of the home-made rifle seized in an earlier operation.

"We also believe he is supplying ammunition for training by the militants.

"The Counter Terrorism division also raided a safe house in Shah Alam on June 28," he said in a statement on Saturday.

He added that the Navy personnel is believed to have assisted in smuggling the militants into Malaysia after they had trained abroad.
