KUALA LUMPUR: Demand for water in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, which increased dramatically due to the current hot weather, is among causes for the disruption of  supply and low water pressure.

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) said the crisis was exacerbated by power outages at Sungai Selangor Phase 1 Water Treatment Plant (LRA SSP1), burst pipe on the ocean floor, and a drop in the Sungai Selangor water level.

"Power disruption at LRA SSP1 for two hours on June 24 affected water supply to Klang and Shah Alam as the period for operating the plant to normal production level takes time.

"The 400mm High Density Polyethylene submarine pipes which supply water to Pulau Ketam had burst causing disruption of water supply to 4,800 consumers in the area.

"A drop in the Sungai Selangor water level on June 25 affected production of the Sungai Selangor Phase 3 (SSP3) resulting in reduced production to 670 million litres daily instead of the normal production of 770 litres daily.

"This affected water supply to Gombak, Kuala Lumpur and Petaling," said SPAN in a statement.

All parties, including operators of LRA SSP1 and SSP3 namely Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash), Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) and the Selangor government are taking appropriate action to address the problem.

In addition, SPAN said supply to most areas which experienced water disruption and low pressure have gradually been restored.

"However, some areas, particularly at the end of the system and high locations have yet to get supplies.

"Syabas is sending relief water supplies through tankers to the areas and two bottles of drinking water with a capacity of five litres to each family in Pulau Ketam," said SPAN. - Bernama
