KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, who was sworn in as senator on Thursday, vows to get busy in her new job as deputy minister in the Women, Family and Community Ministry.

"I have five to six years previous experience working under the ministry and is well acquainted with the issues.

"There are issues that I would like to help resolve through the implementation of several measures," she told reporters after taking her oath of loyalty before Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.

Chew said one of the most pressing issues would be to alleviate poverty through targeted programmes for the hardcore poor and single parents.

She added that she would do her best to assist Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim and deputy Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.

Chew, 50, said she took note of Abu Zahar's advice that it was crucial for senators to ensure the continued peace and stability of our multiracial society.

"In this regard, we should not politicise issues which could sow discord amongst the races," she said.
