PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian student succumbed to her injuries on Sunday following a road accident in Iskandariah, Egypt two weeks ago, the Foreign Ministry said.

Ummi Nadiah Filzah Daud passed away in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital there at 8pm local time (3pm Malaysian time) due to severe internal damage to the lungs, the ministry said in a statement.

The accident reportedly occurred when the van ferrying Ummi Nadiah and her friends - all students at the Faculty of Dentistry at Alexandria University - hit the back of a lorry and spun out of control.

The students were thrown out of the van due to the impact. Five other students were injured but the driver escaped unscathed.

The students were on their way to the Borg El Arab International Airport to return home to Malaysia for their semester break.

Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt Datuk Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari and embassy officials are currently in Iskandariah to assist in bringing Ummi Nadiah's remains to Malaysia, as requested by her parents, for burial.

The ministry conveyed its deepest sympathies and condolences to the family.
