MALACCA: Up to June 7, more than 38,400 dengue cases and 75 deaths were reported nationwide this year, compared to about 10,900 cases and 22 deaths over the same period last year.
“These figures mean there has been a 252% increase in cases and 241% increase in deaths,” said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, describing the trend as “worrying”.
Between 30% and 40% of the overall number of cases were in Selangor, with Petaling Jaya recording the most cases.
Dr Subramaniam said the Government’s effort in combating dengue had not yielded much result as public awareness and cooperation were still low.
He said aside from preventive, control, enforcement and educational measures by the Government, there needed to be efforts from all to make it work.
“We can organise hundreds of campaigns and initiate gotong-royong every week, but things will not work without the rakyat being vigilant and taking care of their surroundings,” he said after launching the national-level Dengue Day in Banda Hilir yesterday.
Dr Subramaniam said the virus DEN-2 that occurred in the country in recent years had caused more complications and deaths among patients.
“The Government takes the matter seriously and would continue to eradicate dengue,” he said, adding those living in high-density areas such as the Klang Valley should be more alert about the cleanliness of their surroundings.
