The woman, who is a Vietnamese, used a blade to cut open the handbag of a victim before taking her purse and handphone at about 8pm on Monday.
Sources said several community policemen and hawkers, who were at the market, witnessed her act and decided to trail her.
They stopped the woman when she was putting the loot in a lorry parked in the area and took her to a nearby police station.
At the police station, the woman, who was wearing a long dress, inserted the handphone into her vagina when the people around did not pay attention. However, police later retrieved the handphone from her.

> Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported that the teenage daughter of Hong Kong film director Oxide Pang, who was previously staying with Malaysian actress-singer Lee Sin Jie (pic), has moved out to stay with Lee’s relative.
It is understood that this was a temporary arrangement made by Lee, as she did not want Pang’s 14-year-old daughter Yan Yan from a previous marriage, to be affected by her current condition.
Sin Chew reported that Pang’s close friend said Pang, who left Kuala Lumpur on Monday, would be back in Malaysia to accompany Lee once he settled his work in Beijing.
Pang was caught openly kissing and hugging Hong Kong model Liddy Li in Hong Kong last month.
