IPOH: Forty aspiring journalists taking part in the BRATs Ipoh/Taiping workshop have been scouring places in search of rich culture and heritage.
The participants – selected from around Malaysia – visited Kuala Sangga, a fishing village said to house pirates in the past, yesterday.
They also checked out a charcoal factory set up in the 1940s.
Their three-day programme included assignments which took them around Ipoh on Thursday where they went for a heritage walk, visited the Chang Jiang white coffee factory and went behind the scenes of the famous Foh San dim sum restaurant.
Participants were taught interviewing techniques, photography, videography and writing methods.
“It has helped build my confidence. The programme isn’t just about journalistic skills. It also teaches you qualities that help in your life, especially in decision-making. It’s an experience you can’t get in school,” said Venod Nambiar, 16.
For Louisa Liew, 17, the experience had been a “good reality check”.
“There’s so much effort that goes into writing even a short news story. Nobody ever sees that,” said Louisa.
Their stories, pictures and videos on Ipoh will be published on June 17 in R.AGE, The Star’s youth section.
BRATs (bright, roving, annoying teenagers) is The Star’s young journalists’ programme, organised by R.AGE.
