All in a day’s work: Mah’s wife Datin Yeoh Pooi Hoon wiping sweat off his face during a visit to the Pasir Bedamar market.
TELUK INTAN: Newly elected Teluk Intan MP Datuk Mah Siew Keong said support from outstation voters would have been 50-50.
The Gerakan president said no one should assume that all voters who were not based in the town were DAP supporters or that younger voters did not support Barisan Nasional.
Stressing that many young people had also voted for Barisan, he said: “There were more voters from the fourth to fifth channels, all young and new voters, compared with the first channel.”
Mah who visited the Pasir Bedamar market to thank voters yesterday, said Gerakan would conduct an in-depth analysis of the by-election results and identify all the factors before commenting further.
“We have not seen the details yet. On the surface, I think we won big in Changkat Jong but we also lost big in Pasir Bedamar.
“The votes in Changkat Jong managed to cover the loss in Pasir Bedamar for a narrow victory,” he said.
Mah said securing a victory within a year of losing in the last general election with a 7,600-vote majority was not an easy feat.
“I am proud of the achievement and I would like to thank all party and component party members for it,” he said to applause from those accompanying him.
Mah defeated DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud with a 238-vote majority by polling 20,157 votes against Dyana’s 19,919. There were 543 spoilt votes.
Mah said he was happy to prove his detractors wrong, noting that there were many online “experts” and analysts who had said that Barisan Nasional and Gerakan would lose by 10,000 votes.
“They are mostly from Kuala Lumpur who did not meet the people here like I did. We were quietly confident and had a feeling that we could do it,” he added.
Mah said he would have retired from politics had he lost.
