PETALING JAYA: Taxis disappear from the roads during bad weather and peak hours, complained commuters.

Student Nurul Farhana Hanafiah, 18, said it was easy to hop into a taxi when the roads were clear and the weather sunny.

“It depends on the area... but if it’s rainy, it becomes super difficult to find a taxi,” she said.

Filipino Arnell Eimog, 35, said that when it rained, even if he used (smartphone app) MyTeksi, the operator would inform him there would be no taxis coming.

An Indonesian who wanted only to be known as Suriyanti, 30, said taxi drivers here were very choosy, where people like herself appeared to be ignored in favour of richer-looking passengers.

“If they dress better or are orang putih (Caucasians), they will take them and not me,” she said.

Many netizens also recount bad experiences with rogue cabbies.

On Twitter, @MeiLingChin said: “Just go to KLCC and you’ll see them harassing the passengers, dictating the price, parking illegally (and) obstructing traffic.”

@Amu_Ma has also endured “countless events” of errant behaviour: “No meter, charged four times the usual price, took other passengers without permission.”

There was no shortage of complaints on Facebook either.

Netizen Melinda Soh said Penang was notorious for exorbitant cab fare: “A short 5km distance is already RM20 (without meter)!”

Shashi Netto said: “There should be fixed rates for journeys with meters. Enforcement authorities should check meters from time to time as they are frequently tampered with.”

Mohen Subramaniam said that taxis parked at monorail, bus and LRT stations overcharge without meter.

“Increase the number of enforcement officers and the working hours. Check them daily for drugs and alcohol.”
