Head on: Abu Backer ‘fainting’ in front of Guan Eng’s car at the state assembly building yesterday.
GEORGE TOWN: A Bukit Gelugor by-election independent candidate flung himself in front of the chief minister’s car and “fainted” as he tried to stop Lim Guan Eng from leaving the Penang State Assembly after the sitting.
Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan, 46, “collapsed” when he broke through the police barricade around the car at about 2pm and refused to get up. He had to be taken away in an ambulance after complaining of pain on his side half an hour later.
State legislative building duty security officer Tiraya Abd Rahim said in a statement that Abu Backer had leapt in front of the car and kicked at the number plate.
“It’s an offence to disturb the chief minister who is a public official. But we have no plans to initiate any action against his behaviour because we don’t want to be part of his by-election campaign,” she said.
