IPOH: A 38-year-old labourer in police custody is now lying unconscious at the intensive care unit of the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital with severe head injuries.
S. Selvakumar is reported to have a fractured skull, swollen legs and hands.
His wife M. Puspha, 37, said she was baffled how her husband ended up in the ICU with the injuries.
The mother of five children, aged between eight and 18, said she had last met Selvakumar on May 7 when he was brought to court for a remand order.
“He seemed ok and there were no injuries on him. I was shocked when policemen told me on May 14 that he was in hospital. They told me to go and visit him quickly,” she said yesterday after lodging a report claiming that her husband suffered the injuries while he was in police custody.
She was accompanied by Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran.
Relating how Selvakumar was arrested, Puspha said four policemen came to their home in Buntong at about 9.30am on May 6.
She said they went into the bedroom where her husband was and handcuffed him before questioning him in the living room.
She said they asked him about drugs and he denied he knew anything about it.
Puspha said one of them then brought an item from outside and asked her husband about it, which he again denied knowing anything about it.
She said the policemen then started hitting him in front of her, adding that they took him away when she and her children started to scream.
Kulasegaran said Puspha tried to lodge a police report on Saturday but was not allowed to do so and was told that her husband was out on police bail.
Perak police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said there was a report on one accused arrested for drug trafficking case.
SDCP Acryl Sani said it was reported that he had slipped and fell while relieving himself in the lock-up and was injured.
“The accused is admitted at the hospital for treatment. I have instructed the OCPD to carry out a thorough investigation to establish what actually happened,” he added.
