PETALING JAYA: A group of youths has staged a peaceful demonstration to protest against the sacking of Kedah MIC Youth council member K. Somasundaram.
They held placards and banners bearing the image of MIC disciplinary committee chairman Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar, who expelled Somasundaram last Tuesday over continuous criticism of party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel.
Apparently, Somasundaram had spoken out against the way MIC had handled its nominations for four senator posts.
“What I did was merely to question the leadership for their ineffectiveness. As a member of the party,
“I have the right to do so,” Somasundaram said during the protest in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Several MIC Youth leaders claimed that Nijhar did not give Somasundaram a chance to defend himself.
MIC Youth chief C. Sivarraajh said the disciplinary committee should issue a show-cause letter to Somasundaram first so that he could have a chance to explain his actions.
When contacted, Nijhar said there were several warnings given to Somasundaram but he had continued to defy them.
He said the party constitution allowed the committee to expel a member who is deemed to have acted against the party without consulting the leadership.
“The expelled member has the right to appeal to the central working committee,” he said.
Nijar said the decision to expel Somasundaram was made following consultations with fellow committee member Datuk Randhir Singh and secretary-general Prakash Rao.
