Enough water in Selangor for the next six months

SHAH ALAM: Folks in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor have been assured that there will be enough water to last the next five to six months.

“We have adopted several app¬≠roaches in recent months to address the water issue.

“I can confidently say that there will be enough water to last during the Ramadan month and after that,” said Selangor executive councillor Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi at a press conference yesterday.

He was asked the state government’s plan to address the effects of the El Nino phenomenon expected from next month.

It was recently reported that a special Cabinet committee had been set up as the country braces for El Nino from June to September and a dry south-west monsoon.

The committee would be headed by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

El Nino, a periodic warming of the waters of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, is expected to bring about a prolonged dry spell, seriously affecting farmers who grow rice, vegetables and fruits, and adversely impact the country’s oil palm industry.

Dr Ahmad, who is executive councillor in charge of infrastructure, reiterated yesterday that water samples pumped from nearby lakes and mining ponds into Sungai Selangor were safe and met standards.

Drawing water from lakes and ponds was one of the measures identified by the Selangor government to address rapidly declining water levels in several dams, triggering a two-month-long water rationing exercise which ended on April 30.

Dr Ahmad said the water level at the Sungai Selangor dam stood at 41.75% of its capacity yesterday morning.
