KLANG: Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has retained the Kuala Selangor PKR division chairman post uncontested after his sole challenger, S. Manikavasagam, was disqualified from the race and suspended from the party with immediate effect.
The PKR disciplinary board also suspended six others including Khalid’s political secretary Mustapha Mohd Talib for breaking campaign rules in the problem-riddled party election.
A number of them were suspended simply for bringing their grievances to the media instead of through party channels.
All have been issued show-cause letters as to why they should not be sacked from the party.
In an angry response, Manikavasagam, who was the former Kapar MP, lambasted the PKR political bureau, saying that its decision was lopsided and unfair to him.
It is learnt that Manikavasagam had crossed the line because he went to the media to openly accuse the Selangor Mentri Besar of money politics instead of going through party channels.
He had claimed that Khalid, through a third party, allegedly paid voters RM50 each for their sup-port.
His claims were allegedly broadcast on TV1 and TV3 and also carried in Utusan Malaysia.
When contacted, Manikavasagam said: “I was not even called to explain myself and the next thing I knew was that my membership has been suspended pending investigations. Is this how PKR is run nowadays?
“I am following the footsteps of (PKR adviser Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) in championing democracy and fighting corruption but there is no democracy seen in the party.
“I am not the only one to speak to reporters. He (Khalid) has also spoken to reporters.
“Why is he not suspended?” asked Manikavasagam, who is a PKR life member.
Khalid was tight-lipped about what transpired at the meeting which he attended in his capacity as Mentri Besar.
He told reporters that Anwar,
who is head of the political bureau, would make an announcement soon and that party members had been asked to refrain from speaking about the meeting.
It is learnt that some party members have questioned why no action was taken against Badrul Hisham Shaharin from Rembau and who is better known as Chegubard for making false accusations against party leaders in the media.
Chegubard had openly bad-mouthed incumbent deputy president Azmin Ali during the campaign.
The party has postponed indefinitely polling in 27 divisions until the election committee completes investigations into complaints of irregularities.
The last stage of the party polls in Selangor erupted in quarrels, fist fights and acts of violence with ballot boxes thrown to the ground and doors broken down.
