PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has urged youths to stay away from extreme teachings that could bring harm to the country.
In his speech at the launch of the National Youth Day celebrations, the prime minister said youths should also prevent themselves from being trapped in liberalism or pluralism thoughts.
Instead, the Prime Minister called on the young generation to practice moderation.
"This approach is comprehensive and integrated, as an example, the practice of Islamic teachings in a balanced and holistic way in all aspects of life," Najib told about 500 youths at the launching at Putrajaya International Convention Centre on Thursday.
Moderation was among six criteria outlined by Najib to strengthen the future of the country through the youths.
The other criteria are knowledge and skills, entrepreneurship, volunteerism, love for the nation and morality.
Under knowledge and skills, Najib called on youths to build their intellectual capital by adopting innovative and creative ideas.
He cited Japan and Korea as success countries which emerged as competitive economies based on their knowledgable and highly skilled people.
The Government also encourages entreprising youths to participate in businesses through various assistance schemes, he added.
"Having a spirit and culture of volunteerism is also important in driving the activities of an association and organisation leadership," Najib said.
The Prime Minister also announced an incentive of RM1.5mil for the National Youth Council to coordinate the formation of an Asean Community secretariat, which is expected to bring together youth non-governmental organisations in the region by 2015.
