KOTA BARU: A grandfather is hoping to “conquer” Europe after successfully completing a solo cycling trip around peninsular Malaysia.
Wan Hashim Wan Mahmood, 68, who created history by cycling round the peninsula in 28 days earlier this year, now plans to go on a cycling trip around Europe in August.
The grandfather of 18 grandchildren said he hoped to cycle around several European countries such as England and Holland.
“I will visit several major cities in those countries. The expedition is scheduled to start in August,” he said.
He estimated the trip to cost about RM90,000 to cover bicycle, spares, food and accommodation for four months over a distance of 7,500km.
Wan Hashim, who has six children aged between 28 and 41, said he wanted to promote Malaysia and prove that senior citizens could also bring honour to the country.
“I want to prove the capability of Malaysians apart from promoting awareness on protecting one’s health,” he added.
On Jan 26, Wan Hashim completed his cycling mission over 2,200km across Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Singapore, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kedah, Perlis and Thailand.
He said he entered southern Thailand on a vehicle before continuing to cycle from the border in Sungai Golok and arrived in Rantau Panjang on Feb 22.
On April 30, Wan Hashim was inducted into the Malaysia Book of Records for his achievement. — Bernama
