GEORGE TOWN: It will be a four-cornered fight for the Bukit Gelugor by-election on May 25.
The candidates are DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh, Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan, retiree Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abd Sathar and lawyer Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan, 46.
The Election Commission did not accept the candidacy of marketing consultant Lim Chee Khoon, 52, from the newly formed Penang Front Party as he did not bring the RM15,000 deposit.
Lim, a former Gerakan member, said the people who were supposed to bring the deposit came late.
Homestay operator Mohd Yacoob Mohd Noor, 25, who had announced earlier that he wanted to contest, arrived at about 10.15am after nomination closed.
He claimed he was played out by his proposer and seconder who did not turn up although he had been waiting since 9am.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Karpal Singh on April 17.
Ramkarpal, 38, who is Karpal’s third son, arrived at Dewan Sri Pinang with hundreds of family members and supporters.
They shouted slogans and played cymbals and other musical instruments as they accompanied Ramkarpal to the nomination centre from the Speaker’s Square at the nearby Esplanade.
Party members and supporters were seen holding posters and wearing stickers bearing Karpal’s image.
There was also a tinge of nostalgia as Ramkarpal rode on a red jeep which used to ferry Karpal around in previous elections.
Among the Pakatan Rakyat leaders who came were PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and DAP heavyweights including Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng.
Huan, 53, was the first to submit his nomination papers at 9.01am after praying at the Goddess of Mercy Temple earlier. The former Gerakan vice-president denied claims that he was a proxy candidate of Barisan Nasional.
Mohamed Nabi Bux, 63, claimed to be a PAS member. He came with an entourage of supporters who wore T-shirts and carried banners bearing the words “Hudud in Penang 2020”.
