SABAK BERNAM: It was a chaotic day for PKR members in at least two divisions, with accusations of irregularities, threats, curses and even an attempt by one member to hit another with a stick here.
At the Sabak Bernam PKR division poll, even the women turned ugly by tugging at each other’s clothes over disputes that arose during the voting process.
In one instance, a division member tried to hit another party supporter with a stick. He was, however, stopped by the more level-headed members who also helped to disperse the unruly crowd with police assistance.
The division election, which started at around 11am at the Sabak Bernam mini convention centre here was called off two hours later following allegations of cheating and misconduct.
Former International Islamic University of Malaysia lecturer Dr Abdul Aziz Bari, one of four contenders for the top division’s post, claimed he saw election candidates mingling around in the polling centre.
Elsewhere, allegations of irregularities led to the calling off of the Kuala Selangor PKR elections and the much-anticipated face-off for the chairman’s post between Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and former Kapar MP S.Manikavasagam to be aborted.
An official of the election committee announced at 2pm yesterday that the election had been put on hold indefinitely.
While some members claimed that there were phantom voters, several others alleged that supporters were found inside the polling centre.
Khalid’s political secretary Azman Abidin showed pictures to back the claim.
“Whether they are supporters of Tan Sri (Khalid) or others, they should not be inside the polling centre,” he said.
Manikavasagam, on the other hand, accused Khalid of giving, through his officers, RM50 to several members to vote against him.
The mentri besar, however, denied the claim, adding that Manikavasagam was welcome to lodge a formal complaint on the issue.
Khalid later tweeted an apology to all members over the failure to carry out the division elections.
Exasperated members told the media that they had given up on the PKR, accusing the party of having failed to live up to its democratic policies.
